“Stupid Yuri, cannot solve this stupid detective case, in our stupid team. Stupid manager, sitting in his room, ordering his stupid detective team to work. Stupid Erwin, agreeing to solve this stupid case, in this stupid company.” I whispered in frustration. “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. Do good to those who hate you. Just calm down and cheer up for god’s sake. What’s up? What makes you mad?” Yvonne asked as Yuri had gone out for dinner. I told Yvonne that a girl was murdered in Malacca and Yuri had failed to look for clues. So, we were told to investigate the case. Yuri Lim, Yvonne Tan and I are from the same team. Yvonne Tan is an intelligent and talented girl who had a sweet and delicate face that resembled her mother very much. She was the Jack-of-all-trades because her studies were excellent and she was always the top student in school. She was also good at badminton. Her driving skills were wonderful as she cared a lot for her car. She is an ace in solving the detective case. We were lucky to have her in our team. As for Yuri and I, we were just like a normal kid. Together, we work like a Trojan and put our best foot forward in every case. I felt as if we were like the three heroes, Batman, Batgirl and Robin. It was the unforgettable case which fell on 14 March 1983. It all started on a cold winter night. The air was thin and the blue rose was the sign. The truth will be revealed yet I shall be blind. I close my eyes and let the sin called me alive. After making our necessary preparation, we were soon off to the scene. After an hour at traveling, soon we reached the scene. Without a second thought, we came down from the car, driven by Yvonne and we rushed to the girl who was murdered. Yuri Lim and I took a closer look at her and we tried to look for some clues. Yuri pointed to the blue rose which was lying on the floor beside the victim and he immediately suggested to take the blue rose to the office for investigation. I readily agreed. I saw the blood flowing out from the victim’s chest profusely. Then, Yvonne came to me and said that the girl was walking home from Golden Flower Restaurant which was a stone’s thrown away and she was stabbed and shoot in her chest. Without further ado, I told Yuri to look for the bullet shell. Meanwhile, Yvonne and I went to see the police officer for more information. As we were discussing, Yuri came to us and pointed us a suspicious guy who was standing outside the restaurant and he was looking at us. Yuri told me he might be the murderer. So, we immediately ran after him but he was too quick for us and he was nowhere to be seen. We searched high and low for him but he was gone. We gave up after minutes of finding. The next day, Yvonne and I went back to our office for investigation as Yuri was on his sick leave on that day. We took the blue rose and scanned it through our computer. Unfortunately, we found nothing. Yvonne suggested that we looked for the police officer whom we talked to at the scene to get the victim’s details. I nodded in agreement. After that, we walked into the car and drove off to the police station. After minutes of driving, we arrived at the police station. The police officer greeted us the moment we stepped inside his room. Just as I was about to speak, the officer took out a file of documents of the victims. We were over the moon after flipping through the documents because it has the address of the victim’s house. Yvonne smiled happily. The police officer told us to go to the victim’s house for investigation. We readily agreed. When I looked at my watch, I realized it was already lunchtime and we left immediately. So, we decided to have lunch together in Golden Flower Restaurant as we were on the way to the victim’s house. When we were having lunch there, we saw a waitress holding a bunch of the same blue roses that we saw at the scene. I stood up and asked her some questions on the blue rose but unfortunately the waitress refused to tell us. After our lunch, we drove off to the place we have planned. “Erwin, please mind your ‘p’s and ‘q’s when we are there. I wish Yuri is with us now but that lazy pig said that he is under the weather,” Yvonne reminded me and I nodded. Soon, we reached the house. We were shocked when the house was painted with colourful and bright colours. We stood in front of the door and rang the bell. At first, nobody answered. But after we rang the bell a few times, a small-built man open the door. We introduced ourselves and told him the news about the murder case. Tears were threatening to spill out of his eyes. After hearing the news, but he blinked rapidly, not wanting us to see how hurt he was. He wanted to chase us out of his house but due to the intelligence and quick-minded in Yvonne’s mind that could gift of the gab, he opened the door and sat on the floor in the living room, crying out his emotions. I walked near him and comfort him and he dried his tears in the twinkling of an eye. He stood up and sat on the chair. “Can you tell me your relationship with her?” Yvonne asked. According to him, he was the victim’s best friend. I walked near him and consoled him by telling him that we find out who was the murderer and detain him as soon as possible. After realizing that we were detective officers, he introduced himself as Andrew. Andrew smiled at us apprehensively and took a deep breath. He then began to tell stories about his childhood days with the victim, Adelyn. Andrew told us that they had known each other since they were seven years old when Andrew’s family emigrated from Singapore to Malaysia and that was how they had known each other since they were classmates in the same secondary school at that time. Sweet memories of childhood instantly flooded his memory. “There was a fateful memory that could not forgotten. I had to stay at Adelyn’s house for a few days as my family had to fly back to Singapore to attend their relative’s wedding,” Andrew said. “So, what happened next? What did you do there?” Yvonne interrupted. Listening to his story excitedly and attentively. Andrew continued and said that it was only school time. In the morning, they walked to school together and after school, they went to the seaside to build sandcastles together. According to Andrew, they had built very big sandcastles. “Wow, a big sandcastle? I am sure that it takes a long time to be completed, isn’t it?” I asked in excitement. “Yes,” he replied, and then continued, “After a few days later, I received a letter from my relative and said that my father had met with an accident in Singapore and I was told to rush back to visit my father as soon as possible. When I told this news to Adelyn, Adelyn cried her heart out, not knowing that I had to abandon her so early. When I came back last week, I told Adelyn the bad news about my father who had kicked the bucket due to the lack of blood. She was sad. And we planned to visit my mother next week but now she was murdered.” Andrew cried. “Come on. It’s no use crying over spilt milk and what’s done cannot be undone. You cannot change reality. So, just calm down, relax and plan for the future,” Yvonne consoled Andrew who was crying. “Did Adelyn have a foe?” I asked. “Yes, there was a guy who wanted to take revenge on her because she reported to the police about the selling of pirated CDs in his stall,” Andrew replied. “Thank you for your cooperation. It’s a long lane that has no turning. Be cheerful. It’s getting late. We have to go now. Bye!” Yvonne said sweetly and softly. As it was already in the dead of night, we decided to have our dinner and went back home for a rest as were dead tired of traveling. The next day, we were surprised to see Yuri so early in the morning. When we reached the office, Yuri apologized to us for not helping us that day. As a good and kind friend, we forgave him. In the morning, we were in our office, finishing our work until afternoon. After that, we decided to go to Golden Flower Restaurant for a lunch. As we were about to step in the restaurant, Yuri saw the suspicious guy whom we chased on the first day of the case who was working there and Yuri told us to pursue him. We ran in lightning speed but we just could not catch him as he was too fast for us. We were like two tigers catching its prey as Yuri stopped running due to lack of stamina. After a few minutes at chasing, we gave up. That guy managed to get away from us. Anger replaced our heart as we could not believe this situation. At night, we went to the victim’s house again to look for Andrew and more information. When we arrived, there was no one at home. We tiptoed inside the house using our torch as it was very dark. All of a sudden, I realized that someone had pulled Yvonne away. I looked around but there was no one. Then, suddenly someone hit me hard on my forehead with a blunt object and I lost consciousness. When I woke up, I felt giddy and found my forehead bleeding. I was shocked when I saw Yvonne lying on the bed. I called out Yvonne’s name but there was no response but after a few minutes, she woke up and told me that Yuri pulled her onto the bed and made her lose consciousness. Yvonne quickly got up and we looked for Yuri. Then, we found Yuri lying on the floor in Andrew’s room and we also saw Andrew was shot on his chest in the bathroom. I shook Yuri and called out his name, hoping that he was only sleeping. Yvonne saw some pictures and showed it to me. I took a glance at the pictures. On seeing the pictures, I gasped. It was a picture of Yuri shooting Adelyn with a gun. The other picture was Yuri laying the blue rose beside Adelyn’s head. It was believed that the pictures were taken by Andrew. Without further ado, I carried Yuri on my back to the nearest hospital. While waiting for the doctor to operate on Yuri, I told Yvonne to have a rest at home but she refused. “Can you believe it? Yuri was the one who killed Adelyn. No wonder Yuri was his sick leave that day and Yuri stopped chasing the guy in the restaurant.” Yvonne said. “So, Yuri was the guy who sold pirated CDs and was the foe of Adelyn, isn’t it?” I said. Yvonne nodded, looking sad and shocked. After a few hours, the doctor came out and said that Yuri was on the road to recovery and he will be given a clean bill of health soon. The doctor then bandaged my forehead which was bleeding profusely. Yvonne and I went home after that, feeling sad in knowing the truth. On 20 March 1983, the case ended. The case was close with a feeling of sadness and happiness. It had been the most memorable and unforgettable detective case that I had ever been on. Yvonne and I were the only peop
